Ipswich Beaches

Ipswich, a historic town in Massachusetts, is well-known for its picturesque beaches. Visitors from all over the country come to experience the warm sun, refreshing water, and the stunning natural beauty that these beaches have to offer. In this blog, we will delve into why Ipswich beaches are the best, where they are located, who can go to them, the average water temperature, the best time of year to visit, and parking availability.

Ipswich boasts several stunning beaches, each with its own unique features and characteristics. The first and perhaps most well-known beach is Crane Beach, which is situated on Castle Neck in Ipswich. Crane Beach is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, with its expansive shoreline, clear blue waters, and soft white sand. The beach is popular among locals and tourists alike, with ample space for swimming, sunbathing, and other beach activities.

Another popular beach in Ipswich is Plum Island Beach, located on Plum Island. Plum Island Beach is a long, narrow beach that stretches for miles, offering visitors stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding area. The beach is popular among families, as it offers plenty of space for children to play and build sandcastles, as well as opportunities for swimming, paddleboarding and sunbathing.

Both Crane Beach and Plum Island Beach are open to the public, and there is a big priced-tag to park, but it is well worth the money.  During the during peak season, the beaches can get extremely crowded, so it's a good idea to arrive early in the day to secure a spot before 11:00 am otherwise you may be turned away.  But wait, there is another option, the town of Ipswich has a CATA bus that has scheduled stops from downtown to the beach.  Go to the CATA website to get the schedule…the link is here.

When it comes to parking at Ipswich beaches, there are several options available. Both Crane Beach and Plum Island Beach have large parking lots where visitors can park their cars for the day. During peak season, it's advisable to arrive early to secure a spot, as the lots can fill up quickly. Additionally, there are parking restrictions on certain streets in the area, so it's important to check the signs before parking to avoid getting a ticket.

The average water temperature at Ipswich beaches varies throughout the year. During the summer months, the water temperature can reach 62 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit, making it perfect for swimming, surfing, and other water activities on a hot day. However, during the winter months, the water temperature drops significantly, and swimming is not recommended; however, people do swim in the winter (but not for a long period of time)—watch my youtube video of the two young women swimming in the dead of winter HERE.

The best time of year to visit Ipswich beaches largely depends on personal preference. If you enjoy warm weather and bustling crowds, the summer months of June to August are ideal. During this time, the beaches are bustling with activity, and there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the sun, sand, and surf. However, if you prefer quieter beaches and cooler weather, the fall and spring months are perfect. During these times, the crowds are smaller, and the weather is cooler, making it ideal for hiking, bird-watching, and other outdoor activities.  There are many beach paths around crane beach and the castle hill estate.  The whole area is so beautiful, and you don’t want to miss doing this!  Bundle up in the winter though because the sea breezes make for a chilling walk!

In conclusion, Ipswich beaches are some of the best in the country, offering visitors stunning natural beauty, cool waters, and plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. Whether you're looking for a bustling beach experience or a quieter getaway, Ipswich beaches have something to offer everyone. So, pack your sunscreen, bring your family, and come experience the magic of Ipswich beaches for yourself.
